I haven’t read the books you mentioned… but I’m going to buy your new novel, it sounds interesting and I really enjoyed Other People’s Secrets. I’ve been looking for a German translation so my friend in Germany can read it – is there one?

Hi Louise. Disappointed with the delay of new book but it’s understandable that you have been delayed. I hope you’ve recovered from your eye problems now and are feeling much better? I’ve got around 100 pages left to read of Other People’s Secret and have to say i have really really enjoyed it! Still don’t know yet what the secret is between Dom and his mother or what exactly Zach is up to (if anything at all!) Find his infatuation with Bea slightly creepy…wishing you well and looking forward to June 2012 for my summer read!

Though it’s hard to believe, I found alcohol to be more expensive in Hammers than London. You almost had to wheelbarrow your cash down to the bar. But, on the plus side, pancakes! And clogs.

There was me feeling guilty because I buy most of my books from Amazon (felt I was ripping off the author somehow, not to mention helping in the closing down of local book shops who are losing trade thanks to the likes of Amazon et al), but now I feel better to think that even authors buy from Amazon! We do have some great secondhand bookshops and charity shops here though and it’s always worth a good rummage for some good deals.

On the subject of chocolate…long may the return of Wispa reign supreme and why is all chocolate shrinking??!! It’s just not fair!!

Re libraries, we have our own at work where we just put books in the staff room with a note saying whether we want it back or not then it gets read by colleagues and their family/friends, etc. A good book can soon do the rounds!

Books in NZ are very expensive. They’re only cheaper in UK because there’s no tax on them.

To Nina Bell, you’re right: the last thing we want is a situation where the only print books available are those the supermarkets happen to stock that week, based purely on the sales of the author’s previous one. Even with those titles, blink and you’ll miss them, frankly.

Yes GeekyMummy, I’ve been amazed and impressed at library gigs to see how much more libraries offer than just reading. One I spoke at last summer has a club called ‘The Old Days’, where people get together to talk about anything they like from their childhoods and earlier life. Fantastic and fascinating.

I love our local library, it’s the hub of our community. The library team are always really friendly and organise great activities for the kids and adults. Really pleased that so many authors have openly supported libraries. It is a travesty that so many are being closed.

Ironically we go more than I remember ever going as a child. But that is probably a reflection of how much libraries have changed, ours is definitely not quiet – or at least it isn’t when we are in the building.

Nice Post. I’d just like to add that not all books are cheap – only the few hundred titles every month in 3 for 2s or half-price offers etc. If books don’t get into the special promotions or supermarkets, the price is now nearly £8 for a paperback, which alot of people feel is expensive. It discourages readers from trying new authors or reading backlists, whereas going to the library means they can take a chance on someone new.

I enjoyed Other People’s Secrets enormously. Being in the process of trying to write a book myself, I study other books for the style and flow especially the detail. Your book is the first that actually made me wonder at the amount of detail in the charector’s expression and thoughts before replying to a question or asking one.

I motored through this series on DVD, and was consequently afflicted with a longing for Jon Hamm/Don Draper that threatened to derail my daily life. So I Googled him, watched an interview … and was cured! Idols and actors have feet of clay – Don looks like the class nerd when he laughs. Fact. (My friend, a 54 year old who should know better, has just become the Daddy of twins and the first, indeed the only, plan he laid for their future was to teach them to mix and serve cocktails. We debated the age this should happen and agreed that they should be at least six, or it was obscene. After six it’s merely distasteful.)
